What do you think about services like Google Drive?

Did you know Google Drive is a public service? So what does that mean for you?

There are two kinds of services right now, public services and private services. And it would be no different than driving your car to work or taking public transportation. They both have their advantages, and really, it comes down to what works best for you.

If you take public transportation, you’re exposed to the public…and whatever that means. And you’re reliant upon that transit system being maintained and operated and getting you from Point A to Point B as you expect.

This is versus taking your car to work, where you’re sitting there privately by yourself, drinking your coffee, being able to listen to music loud, and not really having to worry about being pick-pocketed or assaulted.

There are two different schools of thought.

So you have to ask yourself, what does it mean for your security? Do you mind that Microsoft or Google or any of these other services have the ability to do whatever they want with the data that you post up there?

Have you read the SLA’s or the license agreements? Are you comfortable with that? Are your clients going to be comfortable with that?

It’s important to remember that the higher the profile, the bigger the target. The viruses, just like the crooks, go where the people are. The more there are, the more there are. That’s just the way it is.

There are a lot of trade-offs when you go with public transportation. There’s a trade-off in terms of time, in terms of safety, and in terms of potential interruptions that can make it take even longer than normal. But if you’re comfortable with all of the trade-offs, then public transportation can be a great option for you.

Really, it comes down to how important it is for your data to be always immediately available and always secure. Could your business survive without its data? If the answer is yes, then public cloud might be a good option for you. But if the answer is no, the smart and obvious decision is to go with a private cloud solution where you can be certain your data is always accessible and secure.
