It’s not about Data Backup – It’s about Data Restore
Does your business have a reliable data backup plan in place?
This post is by Bill Ruby. Bill is Rubiconn’s CTO and a master of differentiating between marketing hype and valuable technology.
It’s amazing to me how many small businesses do not have reliable backups. Recently Rubiconn offered free network audits for small businesses. These audits included looking for such things as OS patch updates, antivirus software installed, age of machines, etc. The truly unbelievable part was that 100% of all restores failed to recover data when tested. This included online, tape, and disk backups.
Really? In 2012? Now I have been in the IT game since 1985 and backups have always been a problem, but with todays solutions THERE IS NO EXCUSE.
My caution to everyone is: DO A REGULAR DATA RESTORE TO ENSURE BACKUP INTEGRITY.
However, with data storage sizes getting to be larger and larger, it is becoming impractical to do a full data restore in an acceptable amount of time for most businesses. Especially the successful ones. This is why I say it is not about backup, it’s about the restore. Or more specifically, it’s about REPLICATION if you are going to run a truly reliable network or cloud environment.
I will cover more on replication in my next post.
